The 21st Hungarocon was held between 26-29 July 2001. This was the 10th in the city of Salgotarjan. Around 100 people attended the convention. The presentations covered several topics: research on Hungarian SF literature at ELTE, artificial intelligence, science fiction art, and other SF related themes. Besides these, the audience could participate in a round-table talk with the owners of Cherubion and N&N publishing companies. Finally, there was the 2001 Writers Workshop held by leading Hungarian authors and critics.
Hungarocons organiser, the Avana Association, announced three awards: the Peter Zsoldos Award for printed novels and short stories, the Hugo Preyer Memorial Award for non-published (amateur) short stories, and a fine-art award for creators of SF related art.
For the Peter Zsoldos Award the jury chairwoman Judit Trethon emphasized two novels among the nominees. It was hard to choose between A Pilota (The Pilot) by Balázs Wizner Veg, and A Kek Bolcso (The Blue Cradle) by Lászlo Bujtor. After a long deliberation the jury selected the latter. Laszlo Bujtor writes under the penname Leonard Banister.
The short story award went to Janos Ban (penname: Kim Lancehagen) for the story Off topic, published in the anthology Aranypiramis (Golden Pyramid) by Cherubion. The story is about an Internet chatroom starting up again after a devastating nuclear war.
The Hugo Preyer Memorial Award went to Ferenc Bajzafi for Az albino szeme (The Eye of the Albino). The art award went to Robert Tars painting A no szuletese (The Birth Of The Woman).
The on-Line SF Magazine Solaria will publish all winning stories except the novel. Article from Solaria Science Fiction Magazin (www.solaria.hu).

I was a little surprised to receive a silver hardback Perry Rhodan novel in my SFCD (Science Fiction Club Deutschland) pack – then I realised that it was a biography of Clark Dalton – real name Walter Ernsting, complete with a description of his place in German fandom, and descriptions of which Perry Rhodan and Atlan novels he was responsible for.
Lots of photographs, lots of bibliographic detail, all in all a very important piece of work for anyone interested in the German SF community. Most German fans start (or started) off with Perry Rhodan.
