Future International Conventions...

This edition of the Fans Across the World Newsletter seems to have got eaten by the con listing. I've already brought down the print size, any smaller and half my readers would be unable to read it which would be counterproductive, so I'll either have to start cutting the information given for each con (difficult again, I'm already writing most of them in telegraphese), or start cutting out conventions. I could certainly drop Millenium off the end during "busy" months, but I'm a bit loathe to start hacking 1995 up. Any comments?

For this time it's not so important. As a result of the non-appearance of the March issue at the correct time I can produce two post-Helicon issues this month, calling one April and one May, then the May issue need have no listing at all. But this is a real bad reason for going bimonthly.

When at Helicon I started asking after cons various people said to me "But didn't you know that Recursion is an annual fixture?", no I didn't, how could I when I'd been given the dates piecemeal?

So, for the record. Worldcon usually ocurrs on an obscure US national holiday called Labor Day. Most Anglo-American diaries will tell you when this is, and Worldcon is usually sufficiently well advertised that you won't have to work it out from first principles.

Eastercon is the British national convention, held over the Catholic and Anglican Easter. If you have to you can work this out using tables in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, however most Anglo-American diaries give Easter for the next few years. Swancon takes place down under at the same time.

Dracon and Nordcon have a periodicity I don't understand. They are related to national holidays held in Poland and the Czech Republic, and they both take place during the first or second weekend of December.

The others are relatively easy. They take place on a certain week of a certain month.

The French National Convention takes place at the end of August or during the first weekend of September. This means it usually clashes with Worldcon.

SF Days NRW takes place during the first weekend of July in Duesseldorf.

Chumatsky Shlyah, the Ukrainian National Convention takes place during the first weekend of October.

Novacon takes place over the first weekend of November in Birmingham, England (except when it doesn't).

Hansecon takes place during the last weekend of October.

I know of no others, although I suspect that the Helion meeting in Timisoara has a fixed position, Kontur in Bialystok is usually early May, and many of the fan camps are yearly meetings, but the exact dates are worked out nearer to the time.

Annual events with a rough timing include: the British Unicon, the British filk con, Intercon (though this may have fallen foul of a Baltic convention glut this year), Confuse, Lituanicon, the Hobbit Games, and the Wetzlarer Tage. Please inform me if you know of any others – I am aware that Germany in particular has a full yearly calendar of small cons.

Many thanks to all those who gave me convention details at Helicon, I hope I've added them all.

Stop Press. (In other words I forgot these)
