Eurocon '94

The 1994 Eurocon, to be held in Timisoara, will probably take place from the 26th to the 28th of May. These dates have yet to be finally confirmed, and may be slightly lengthened. It is also envisaged to have a sightseeing day before or after the convention, and the committee is looking into organising a several day long "Dracula" tour for attendees before or after the convention.

The fee is 12 pounds. Don't send the money direct to Timisoara (Tudor Besuan, see over), the post is far too insecure. I have agreed to act as agent for the convention, send any money to me (address above) for the time being – saying that that is what it is for (or I may get terminally confused...).

Intersecting

Oliver Gruter-Andrew has taken over from Fiona as Treasurer, to whom many thanks fro her help. Jackie Gruter-Andrew is helping out as Secretary. The main fund raising now is with Intersection in mind. Helicon was expensive – some money went on memberships, accommodation and food, but most went on transport, either to and from the island, or on the island itself.

The situation at Glasgow should be different. Leaving aside whether the Channel Tunnel has opened by then, there are overnight fares across the channel cheaper than any available to Jersey. Flights from the continent are much cheaper too. (This is when you can get them – Roelof Goudriaan found great difficulty when trying to discover any European mainland travel agent who would handle travel to Jersey).

The most basic Strathclyde University accommodation should be cheaper than any available on Jersey, apart from the campsite, and large numbers of convention attendees are likely to be staying there, so night buses should be easier to arrange (also, Scotland doesn't have laws about maximum bus sizes!).

Mexicon

Mexicon, the "Written SF convention" was smaller than in past years. Partly the difficulty of getting to Scarborouhg, partly the presence of Helicon only a few weeks earlier, mostly the continuing recession. Nonethelesss many people were missed and book dealers didn't do as well as they had hoped they would.

An innovation was the Mexicon Lecture, this time given by Tom Shippey on The critique of America in Contemporary Sceince Fiction, with the examples of Kim Stanley Robinson, Tom Disch and Geoff Ryman contrasted with the faith in the US Constitution of Heinlein.

Other highlights included a new Ken Campbell play, several launch parties, and Norman Spinrad's Red Hot Chilli..

There were also many of the usual four or five person panels. As ever these varied in quality. Preparation quality varied, and while some came to life, others were rather flat. This remains a problem, not only with Mexicon, but also with other British conventions. The lecture was an innovatin, a new form, some of the interviews also worked well, and it is far too much to ask that everything should work perfectly, but can't we think up any new ways of doing anything?

The bar space was rather cramped and noisy. This is an architectural problem, and one it is very difficult to anticipate, but this meant that many of the best conversations I had were in cafes away from the con or walking along the beach. In retrospect I realise that I was either in the programme or out of the hotel, I souldn't be too surprised to find that this happened to others too.

A joint fan funds auction did well, Fans Across the World raised about fifty pounds on odd items, Friends of Foundation over ten pounds on a Foundation subscription, GUFF did well, and TAFF also auctioned some items..

I enjoyed the con, but have things got into a rut? Or am I just getting old?
