UPC SCIENCE FICTION AWARD 1998

This award was given on the 2nd December, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona. The British SF writer Dr. Stephen Baxter gave a lecture on "All Aboard for the Eschaton: Science Fiction and the End of the Universe" before the award itself was presented. Entries for the award came from many different countries, the majority in Spanish, but with several in English, Catalan and French. The First Prize of 1,000,000 PTA, went to BLOCK UNIVERSE, by Robert J. Sawyer (Ontario, Canada), with a Special Mention (250,000 PTA) to: ESTE RELOMPAGO, ESTA LOCURA, by Rodolfo Martinez (Gijon, Asturias, Spain), and GRACOS, by Gabriel Trujillo (Baja California, Mexico). More details can be found at: http://www.filnet.es/bemmag/ na, Tenerife, Spain). The closing date for the 1999 Award is 13 September 1999. Details from BEM's web page (above), or from: Consell Social de la UPC Edifici NEXUS Gran Capita 2-4 08034- Barcelona (SPAIN) Tel: 93-401.6343, Fax: 93-401.7766. The winning novella will be published by the UPC in Ediciones B, its imprint. (From the BEM team)

Baltcon 1999

When Finncon backed down as Baltcon 1999, after discussion among Swedish and Lithuanian board members it was decided to adopt jUnicon in Stockholm as the 1999 Baltcon. A fair proportion of the programme will be in English, including a Baltic Sea SF panel. To increase the Baltic fannish interest a oneshot fan fund, called The Balt Fund, to collect money for paying for the trip to jUnicon of at least one leading Lithuanian SF fan has been set up (the Lithuanians may decide who). Donations to Ahrvid Engholm's Swedish Postal Giro account 436 32 00-9, or cash, cheques, donations, books to auction, etc. (Lithuania was "singled out" because they have an active, organized fandom. Latvia and Estonia have virtually no organized fandom.). Bids for the 2000 Baltcon are currently being sought (from the eastern Baltic states, including Poland and Russia). Details from Ahrvid Engholm: ahrvid[at]hotmail.com...The world will not end in the year 2000, BTW...

Flash Infini on the Web

Parallel Worlds

My most recent package from the Science Fiction Club Deutschland contained a book on the history of DDR fandom – Berichte aus der Parallelwelt (Report from the parallel world) along with the usual issue of Andromeda Nachrichten. It is a stunning piece of work. Compiled by Wolfgang Both, Hans-Peter Neumann, and Klaus Scheffler (Publisher: Erster Deutscher Fantasy Club e.V. , ISBN 3-932621-09-3, email: edfc[at]passau.baynet.de – no price!), it contains the history of fandom in the German Democratic Republic from the first club Saturn in Karl-Marx-Stadt in the late 1950s, until 1990. It covers clubs, conventions, clashes with the authorities, and descriptions of the various fanzines published during this period, from professionally printed magazines, to hand written newsletters, and also some of the SF books. It is also well illustrated with photographs of the covers of zines, letters, convention programme books, and last but not least, photographs of the fans themselves at various conventions and other meetings during this period. If you are intersted in fan history, get it!

Fans Across the World Thanks for help, info, etc. to SFFranco, Dave Langford, the SFCD, BEM, Ahrvid Engholm, and others. Please keep the news flowing in. Thanks to Dave for getting the archive up to date, I'll try and get some of the pre-historic info off its clay tablets, so it can be posted too.
