Newsletter 91

Spanish SF News

The Spanish Association for Science Fiction and Fantasy has recently started up an email newsletter about Spanish SF in English edited by Luis G. Prado. This newsletter will be called Espora, and will contain short items about books, conventions, magazines, authors and fan activities. Eventually it should appear three times a year.

The first issue is scheduled for the end of October. Register at the Onelist page http://www.onelist.com/community/espora or email Luis G. Prado at: portico[at]aefcf.es. The AEFCF Spanish language journal Portico can be found at: http://www.aefcf.es

Istrocon

The same weekend as Worldcon I travelled rather less far, and went to the Slovak national convention Istrocon in Bratislava. After a long bus journey I rested up for a few days as the guest of Juraj Maxon in Bratislava before the con itself started. The venue, Duna, was still being decorated as the convention approached, and remembering the chaos at Conspiracy I was worried. But this time the decorating work had finished by the time the convention started, 'tho the odour of drying concrete remained. Also, as GoH Andrzej Sapkowski remarked, it was the first time we had been at a convention in a bunker – well, an underground bar.

The programme started off in a somewhat informal manner, and became more and more so as time went on. Sunday morning saw the remaining attendees sitting shell shocked on benches, while an impromptu meeting took place in the second bar. The con had evapourated by 2.00pm (this is normal in this part of the world, and you never hold anything substantial on Sunday).

The highlight of the con for me was the art show. This was held in the generator room – yes, a room with a large electric generator. The generator had been decorated with metallic paints, and partially covered with silvery sheeting. Art work by Juraj Maxon and Martina Pilcerova, among others, was then displayed in this mad post-cyberpunk setting to superb effect.

Practically all of the attendees stayed in the nearby students' hostel, and this was where room parties took place on Friday night, with fans piled high on the bunk beds and squeezed into every square inch of floor. I was so dead I slept after leaving, despite being opposite!
